DATES 5TH-14TH APRIL 2026
MAZATLÁN
Mazatlán, like many cities in Mexico, has stark contrasts between wealth and poverty. While much of its beauty and cultural vibrancy shines in tourist areas and well-preserved historical zones, the reality for many of the city's disadvantaged residents tells a more complex story. These challenges are especially evident in neighbourhoods on the periphery of the city, away from the well-trodden paths of visitors.
Many poor and disadvantaged residents of Mazatlán live in informal settlements or low-income neighbourhoods with limited access to basic infrastructure. Challenges like insufficient sanitation, inconsistent access to clean water, and overcrowded housing are common. In these areas, residents often rely on informal economies, such as street vending, construction work, or small-scale fishing, to make ends meet. Seasonal jobs in tourism also provide opportunities, but they are often low-paying and insecure.
